Colorectal Cancer Awareness by SCS and HPB

If you have been watching the TV, you would have come across a very lengthy advertisement from HPB (the one with two uncles chit-chatting and you'd wonder if it's some soap opera) about getting early testing to detect colo-rectal cancer.

The Faecal Occult Blood Test Kit mentioned in the advertisement can be collected FREE year round from the following locations if you are over 50 years old or have a family history of colon cancer:

  • Singapore Cancer Society
  • Satellite Centre @ National Cancer Centre in SGH
  • 9 selected Guardian outlets:
Ang Mo Kio Central Blk 704 Bedok Central Blk 210 Bukit Panjang Plaza
Compass Point Great World City IMM
Parkway Parade Suntec City Mall Toa Payoh Blk 190

To find out more, do visit this website by Singapore Cancer Society http://www.singaporecancersociety.org.sg/wwd-faecal-occult-blood-test.shtm

This Test kit is used to test for trace element of blood in the stool sample. There's 2 tubes per kit for sample collection on 2 different days. The stool collection is relatively "clean" as you would just need to poke your stool with the tube provided in the kit (follow the instructions in the pamphlet given), cap the tube back and mail the kit with the completed form back to SCS for testing.

No mess and no scooping required. Mail each tube back with the envelope provided as soon as you are done (no storing in the fridge please... eeeeewww). SCS will get back to you regarding the results in a few weeks' time. If tested positive for blood in the sample, further tests would be recommended to confirm whether or not there is colo-rectal cancer.
